The Jewish Museum
Libeskind’s design is one of a kind. So much architectural symbolism is hard to find elsewhere. The building is a great example of commemorating a dark history and highlighting the significance German Jews had for the country and Europe.
Reichstag
The building is the symbol of Prussia and German unification. First, it got wrapped by Christo and Jean-Claude, arguably one of the world’s most significant art performances. Later, there were several turns in the construction of a new cupola. Finally, Norman Foster won, based on a design by Gottfried Böhm, and the spiralling dome of democracy is stunningly good.
Holocaust Memorial
Few countries examine their past as Germany does. The holocaust monument’s location close to the Reichstag and Brandenburg Gate is a statement, per se. Eisenman’s walkable sculpture has several feature levels: a place for grieving, interaction, historical communication, spatial emotionality, and (even) play.
The refurbishment of Neues Museum
Stüler invented ground-breaking lightweight technical solutions for the Neues Museum, which was high-tech for its time. However, that made the structure fragile, and the war damaged the building further. Chipperfield renovated Neues Museum for 12 years, and now we can see what is new and what is old. It is a historical architectural patchwork which is simply exquisite.
Museum of the 20th Century
Herzog and DeMeuron won the competition for a new central building on the Kulturforum’s open plain. The site has been a subject of discussion for decades, because the Kulturforum lacks a central building. Not yet completed, it will draw more attention to the Kulturfoum, making it the cultural nexus its creators wanted it to be.
